March’s theme is communication — how we prefer to communicate and what communication is necessary. I’m also exploring learning and training in the media sector.

Communication: preference and necessity

Dare we whisper that this might be Spring on its way? I’ve spotted daffodils, and I have particularly noticed birdsong.
Some birdsong sounds like delight whilst others sound like alerts. There are songsters, morning alarms and gossipers.
We all have our preferred communications methods too. But assumptions about different generations are too easy. Just because Generation Alpha are digital natives does not automatically mean total trust in AI or over-reliance on social media. And I know some Generation X-ers who are getting much of their information from Instagram.
Recently I’ve collaborated with marketing students from Bucks New University. The exercise has led me to notice themes. For Generation X the initial digital “noise” was emails, and this has been overlayed by social media. However, for Generation Z and beyond social media is primary and it can be easy for emails to become an after-thought. Is there a mismatch in recruitment and workplace communications? I suggest it’s not as simple as a generational divide, but about our practice as communicators. What can we do to ensure we don’t miss each other?
- Paying attention to others’ preferences for communication methods?
- Considering which method we use for different types of communication?
- Building in habits to ensure we don’t miss crucial information?
What are your primary modes of communication? Are you in the spaces that will be most helpful for your job search, sense of community, and wellbeing? Are these in person, online or both?
Communication intersects with all our character strengths. Self-regulation and social intelligence play an important role. Where do they feature in your strengths? What does over-using or under-using these strengths look and feel like for you? (see Finding the Golden Mean for further inspiration).
I’m walking more now the days are lighter. It helps me think and plan. Research agrees. Check out Walking and creativity – Walking Scotland to find out more.
🎓Training Highlight:
The media industry is the hub for all things communication related. The ERIC Creative app, focused on this sector, has had a make-over. There is now a library of career talks, providing insights into different career areas.
My review – I use this site regularly to stay current, and recommend it to customers seeking opportunities in sectors from marketing, to film production, animation and performance. I am particularly loving the “Everyone you need to know in the industry” tab.
💼Opportunity Highlight:
Some of you may be members of a trades union representing your industry. If you are beginning your career journey you may be wondering what trade unions actually do. I have long been aware of the learning and training opportunities available to union members, but have only just realised there is a central platform gathering a wide range of employment opportunities with trades unions in one place. Check out Job Vacancies | TUC and let me know if this has supported your job search.
